Our tips for lawn care in spring

The days are gradually getting longer and the first buds and fresh green leaves are slowly appearing in the garden. To fully enjoy your outdoor space later on, it’s best to start preparing your garden for spring now. And for many people, it all begins with the foundation of the garden: the lawn. Here are our best tips for lawn care in spring!

Give your lawn space to grow

Good preparation is half the work. It may sound like a cliché, but when it comes to your lawn it’s absolutely true. Proper lawn care begins with scarifying the top layer. This allows the grass to grow freely again and absorb all the nutrients it needs. You can read more about this in our blog about scarifying. [link invoegen].

Any bare patches can be reseeded immediately after scarifying. Because oxygen and moisture can now be absorbed optimally, the grass seeds end up in an ideal growing environment. This gives them every chance to develop into strong, healthy grass.

The importance of lawn mower maintenance

Did you think about maintaining your lawn mower during winter? Before you start mowing again, it’s important that the blades are properly sharpened. Make sure to visit your dealer beforehand to have the blades sharpened and, if you have a petrol mower, possibly have the engine serviced as well. This makes mowing much easier and keeps your lawn in optimal condition—because good maintenance starts with good tools.

When temperatures rise above 10°C and the grass begins to grow, you can start mowing carefully using the highest cutting height. Keep in mind that grass is still delicate in early spring. Cutting too short or mowing too early can damage the lawn. Young grass also needs time to grow. Later in spring, when the grass grows faster and becomes stronger, you can safely lower the cutting height.

Drainage and fertilizing

Spring weather can be unpredictable, and heavy rain is still common during this period. Prevent puddles from forming on your lawn by ensuring proper aeration and drainage. You can do this with an aeration roller or a garden fork. If conditions are very dry, give your lawn some extra water. An aerated surface allows the grass to absorb moisture more easily.

Nutrients from fertilizer are also absorbed best when water helps carry them into the soil. Therefore, spread fertilizer over the lawn just before rainfall if possible, following the recommended amount on the packaging. With proper lawn care in spring, you’ll enjoy a beautiful lawn all summer long!
